Radio Harold Hill is reaching all corners of the earth from its modest studio set up in St. George’s Church Centre, Chippenham Road.

The 24-hour internet station went live in December, after receiving funding from the church.

And Oyin Oladipo, station manager, says the project is already expanding.

He said: “We have 200 listeners who text in from all around the world and we have more shows starting in February.”

The station was born out of a need to fill the gap created by the closure of Link FM, which also broadcast from the church, and as part of the regeneration of the area.

“We also want to create an opportunity for local young people to gain media experience and volunteer,” said Oyin,

“We are committed to training interested local residents in radio and other skills such as editing, marketing and IT.”

Currently there are two regular shows broadcast - with the rest of the time dedicated to music.

What is community radio?

Factfile

Community Radio refers to a system of licensing small, micro-local, non-profit radio stations, which started in 2002.

It was originally called Access Radio.

To gain a licence, applicants must demonstrate the proposed station will meet the needs of a specified target community, and meet social gain objectives.

No community radio station is permitted to raise more than 50 per cent of its operating costs from a single source and must raise the rest via outside funding.

There are more than 200 community radio stations in the UK.

Up Close and Inspirational airs every Saturday from 12-2pm.

Produced by Teju Chosen, who co-presents alongside Darryl Jones, the show discusses current affairs and brings an eclectic mix of music genres.

Sunday’s on the station are dedicated to Christianity and Stay Free is broadcast from 8am as part of the service.

Essex born pastor, Michael Bassett, delivers his sermons from France, while gospel music is also played throughout the day.

The station is also keen to promote local singers and musicians, and anyone with a demo they would like played is encouraged to send it in.
