One of Romford’s familiar faces died last week after selling heather to passers-by for more than 40 years.
Granddaughter Joeann Horton, 35, has paid tribute to her 79-year-old nan Rachel Brown, of Mawney Road, Romford, describing her as a “fiery woman” with a big heart.
“She wasn’t an ordinary nan, she wasn’t the kind of nan who would spend all of their time baking cakes”, she said.
“She didn’t let being in a wheelchair stop her from going out by herself and doing what she wanted.
“Family was everything to her and we will miss her very much.”
Rachel, a Romani gypsy, grew up in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, before she moved to a traveller site in Romford with her husband in the 1950s.
She spent most of her days selling heather and talking to shoppers in South Street.
Rachel had six children, 16 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
