Eight fire engines were called to the blaze at an industrial estate in Marsh Way less than half an hour before firefighters were due to begin strike action at 5pm.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: “The fire damaged a van, an articulated lorry and a tractor unit.

“Part of two adjacent industrial units were damaged by radiated heat.

“Eight London Fire Brigade crews were initially called to deal with the blaze at 4.36pm.

“Strike action by the Fire Brigade’s Union (FBU) began at 5pm and, after remaining at the fire to ensure there was no risk to life, Brigade crews left the scene and the incident was taken over by contingency firefighters.

“The fire was brought under control by 6.09pm. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.”
