Douglas Mercer, 43 from Rainham was out for a walk when he spotted the fire at Bretons Park near Dagenham Road.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 1.50pm and had the fire under control by 2.50pm.

Douglas told the Recorder: “I noticed all of the smoke blowing up as I got to the side of the Bretons park and it was already well underway.

“It was really spreading quickly.

“I’ve only lived in Rainham for a couple of years but ever summer we’ve been here there tends to be a burn out in that section of the park.”

Four fire engines and 20 firefighters from Hornchurch, Romford, Wennington and Barking fire stations attended the scene.

Douglas often walks his dog in this area and has seen nesting sites for phaesants and rabbits in this part of the park.

“My springador normally tries to chase them and catch them. However they tend to be around at night and not during the day,” he said.
