They say cleanliness is next to godliness – but it’s also a good way of getting closer to some prizes.

This month, two residents are the lucky winners of a new Havering Council initiative for keeping their borough clean.

John Ringrose, from Romford, won a meal for two for using a street litter and recycling bin; and David, Laver, also from Romford, won tickets for the Queen’s Theatre. after being seen using a recycling bin.

The Cleaner Havering reward scheme is a way of thanking residents for doing their bit to keep the borough spick and span.

The council has teamed up with The Queen’s Theatre and Cosmo restaurant to reward those seen to be making an effort to dispose of their rubbish, clean up after their dog, or get involved in community clean-ups.

Mr Ringrose was presented with his prize by Sinead Blatch, who is playing Sleeping Beauty in the Queen’s Theatre pantomime at the end of the year, and Anca Jaglau, floor supervisor at Cosmo.

Residents are entered into the prize draw when they are seen by Havering Council enforcement officers.

Dog fouling, vandalism and litter were found to be the issues that residents wanted addressed in the Your Council, Your Say survey carried out by the council. This led to the launch of the Cleaner Havering campaign.

Cllr Barry Tebbutt, cabinet member for StreetCare, said: “I’m pleased people are continuing to help keep the borough clean. This is the first time we have had different prizes and I’d like to thank the Queen’s theatre and Cosmo for providing these.”
