A woman whose husband was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour has raised more than £3,000 for charity by shaving her head.

Lee Howell, 48, had a second operation to remove a tumour last week, and wife Claire showed her support by joining him for a sponsored head shave to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity.

“I’d never heard of the charity before,” said Claire, 38. “I want to make it as recognised as prostate cancer - it only receives 1 per cent of national spend on cancer research.”

“Everyone was saying to me, ‘are you nervous about shaving your head?’ but I love it, I’m keeping it for summer.”

Lee and Claire’s lives were turned upside down in May when Lee was given 12-18 months to live.

The Rainham couple married a year ahead of schedule in July and Claire has praised Lee’s handling of the situation.

She said: “He’s got this strength and calmness about him. He’s an amazingly strong person and he’s made it so much easier for everybody else.”

Lee was originally told if the tumour came back it would not be operated on, but a Queen’s Hospital surgeon believed his life could be extended and chose to go ahead with the surgery.

“Dr Low decided he wanted to operate again,” said Claire. “And the two oncology nurses Kim and Trisha have been amazing too. We can’t praise them enough”
