A school has celebrated after 15 of its pupils were found to have an IQ in the top 2 per cent of the population and invited to join Mensa.

The high IQ society, which counts renowned authors and a former chairman of Ford among its members, has welcomed students from The Albany School to its ranks.

Abby Champness, 12, has an IQ of 158, just two points behind Albert Einstein and in the top 1pc of the population. She said: “I never thought I would get in to the society. It was brilliant. I called my mum straight away.

“The examination consisted of six tests on different subjects. Some people could say it was hard. It’s about the way you think – you have to approach it in a logical way.”

Headteacher Adam Thorne said: “These students are the high-fliers of this generation. Not only are they very intelligent and hardworking but thoroughly nice young people too.”

The school entered 80 pupils for the Mensa IQ test as part of its “More Able” scheme.

Lisa Wilson, lead teacher for the programme, said the school prided itself on inspiring gifted pupils.

This year, pupils have visited Oxford and Cambridge universities and attended master classes at Havering Sixth Form College and Palmer’s College in Grays.

Ms Wilson said: “Taking the Mensa IQ test helps students gain an accolade which helps them to stand out from the crowd on future application forms.”
