Sixth form students were ripping open their envelopes yesterday (Thu) to find out how their A-level results would affect their future, with one teen delighted to learn she will be travelling across the pond to study.

Fey Popoola, of South Ockendon, went to pick up her results from Havering Sixth Form College, in Wingletye Lane, Hornchurch and discovered she will be on her way to America to study French at Princeton University after getting As in English literature, French and maths.

She said: “I am just really excited that I have done so well! It is such a relief to find out that I got these results.”

Fey, an ex-Gaynes School pupil, applied for several universities in the UK, such as the University of Warwick and the University of Exeter, but felt that none of them gave her exactly what she wanted.

She said: “They’re all great unis but I really loved the team spirit that Princeton had. I went over to America to look around the university and there was a real sense of community there, so whether you were a current student or went there 40 years ago, you still would have felt apart of something.”

Fey will be taking a gap year before she makes her way over to the US, as she wants to spend time in France so she can try to become fluent in French
for her degree.

She added: “I can’t believe that this is all happening to me. It’s all so amazing.”

Havering Sixth Form College was not only thrilled for Fey, but for many others as four were accepted by Oxbridge and the college received an overall pass rate of 97.2 per cent, with a grand total of 232 A*s and A grades.

Principal Paul Wakeling said: “It is very encouraging that the hard work this year has been rewarded by such excellent results.

“To see so many students achieving such good results on a variety of learning programmes is truly inspiring.”
