A dispute between battling neighbours almost ended with one going to jail today after he blasted the man next door with tear gas.

Ian Grant, 51, argued with Steven Boxall outside their homes in Brentwood Road, Romford, and dashed inside to fetch the canister.

Mr Boxall was unharmed by the jet of gas and called the police to have Grant arrested.

Snaresbrook Crown Court heard both men live chaotic lifestyles.

Judge John Lafferty said: “The victim seems to have as many problems as the defendant.”

He told Grant: “Ordinarily I would send a man to prison for this kind of thing and it went to trial – no ifs, buts, or maybes.

“However in your case I accept that since the death of your brother – I won’t name the particulars because that might be distressing or embarrassing to you – you’ve been struggling with many difficulties.”

Sentencing him to three months in prison suspended for a year, Judge Lafferty said: “If you get into trouble again in the next 12 months, in addition to the punishment you receive for the new offence you’ll have to serve this sentence, do you understand that?

“You’re an adult, although you have your difficulties and have had your difficulties, you know when you’re committing an offence.

“This is a miserable existence Mr Grant, coming backwards and forwards to crown court, and you’re young enough to turn your life around.”

The judge said he could not impose a restraining order, as Grant’s victim lived next door but said: “Just keep away from your next door neighbour.”

Grant who is also subject to 12 months supervision, thanked the judge as he was released from the dock.

He admitted administering a noxious substance with intent to injure or annoy and possessing a prohibited weapon on November 6 last year.
