Mischief-making youths kept police busy in Rainham on Halloween night - despite police confiscating 80 eggs from a group.

A group of between 10-15 youths were seen throwing eggs at a bus in Upminster Road South at around 10.50pm.

Several other incidents were reported to police throughout the evening on Wednesday last week.

One resident said: “They went on the rampage around Berwick Road, throwing eggs at a bus, kicking cars, they even punched a girl in the face.”

A police spokesman confirmed they were called to a number of incidents involving antisocial behaviour in the area but she said they did not have a record of an alleged assault.

One local shop worker said that a group he believed to be from out of the area had been intimidating his customers.

Around the same time, officers confiscated 80 eggs in Rainham Village, after another resident saw a group of young teenagers carrying them.

The Havering Police spokesman said: “We are aware that egg throwing is a traditional Hallowe’en pastime and we work hard with local shop keepers to reduce the number of eggs being sold to youths.

“If we find youths with eggs on them we will ask them to destroy then or confiscate them.

“This is common practice around Hallowe’en and one reason we have so many officers on the streets that evening.”

Rainham and Wennington ward councillor Jeff Tucker said: “I’m grateful for the police for their hard work on the night as I’m sure it more residents may well have been affected if they hadn’t.”
