A schoolboy was taken to hospital with head and arm injuries on Monday after being struck by a car on a “dangerous” road.

The accident took place in Front Lane, at the junction of Dorkins Way, close to Hall Mead School, in Cranham at about 3.45pm.

The 12-year-old was taken to Queen’s Hospital, in Rom Valley Way, Romford.

Resident Simon Ward, 36, says his wife and two children were nearly hit by a speeding motorist on the same stretch on Tuesday.

Mr Ward has written to Havering Council in the past asking for safety measures. But these were turned down, an officer said, due to “competing demands for improvement works”.

He said: “I really think that for a busy section of road, which is also used as a cut through by traffic, a crossing for safety is a necessity. It’s dangerous.”

Mr Ward has now started a petition for a zebra crossing and hopes to present it to the council’s highway advisory committee.

Cranham ward councillor Clarence Barrett said: “We want to give this case some backbone and demonstrate to the committee that this is what we need. This is a busy road which is prone to speeding traffic and providing safety measures for road users and pedestrians is very important.”

Havering Council’s Streetcare boss Cllr Barry Tebbutt said: “We’re really very sorry to hear about this accident. We will see if any additional changes need to be made following the police investigation.”
