The community pulled together recently to donate much needed time, and funds, towards a popular August carnival.

More than 50 people attended Collier Row Library to celebrate a donation by Harold Wood Funeral Services towards the Collier Row Carnival.

Guests including the Mayor of Havering, volunteers from the Collier Row Community Group, shopkeepers and business people attended to promote the event, which is scheduled to take place on August 3.

They were joined by staff from the funeral service, whose managing director, Margaret Coyte, donated £1,500 from the company’s charitable wing towards the carnival, in recognition of the Collier Row Community Group’s work in making the area “a great place to live, work and shop.”

Last year 5,000 people attended the carnival, though this year’s theme, The Magic of the Movies, could help see that number bettered.

The funeral company, a family run business, has helped bereaved families in the borough since 1968, and in Collier Row since 1972.

Carol Coyte Lawrence, another director from the company, said: “We won the cup last year for best carnival float. We will have to put on our thinking caps to keep it!”

“Collier Row businesses should take seriously the efforts of the community group’s committee, including deputy mayor, Cllr Linda Trew.

“The Carnival and Christmas Events bring families into the roundabout shopping area and remind everyone that we here on people’s doorsteps.”

Mayor, Cllr Eric Munday commended the donation, especially as Havering had been forced to make drastic cuts to community group grants, like all other local authorities in the UK.

Chair Lesley Haylett, organiser of the Havering Majorettes, said the donation had already encouraged more businesses to get involved.
