Collier Row teens fight their way through a nationwide singing competition, as one is put straight through to the grand final, while another hopes to be the public’s wildcard choice.
Schoolboy, Josh Gleaves, 12, was delighted to hear that he has made it to the final of Teenstar at the weekend when he competed at the semi-finals at the Beck Theatre in Middlesex, where judges described him as a “born star”.
He said: “When we was told, it was like something off of Britain’s Got Talent with thumping dramatic music in the background but it was great that I got through.”
Josh performed Ed Sheeran’s “I see fire”, and was accompanied by one of his friends on the piano but is planning to sing an original song called “Let me” at the final.
He said: “I love singing cover songs but singing my own music feels more like me and I want to show the judges who I am as a musician.”
Ingrid Gleaves, Josh’s mum, said: “Josh loves and breathes music. He was about 18 months old watching Robbie Williams on stage on the telly and told me ‘I want to sing on a stage like him!’ and I think that had always been his ambition.
“Now he is doing so well I actually start to find the whole thing quite surreal. As a mum I feel very protective and follow him around to all his little gigs (they just seem to get bigger and bigger).”
But Shannon Borawski, of Hillrise Road, Collier Row, sadly did not make it through to the next stage of Teenstar but she could be given a lifeline as the wildcard, if she is voted to get back into the contest with votes from the public.
Sarah Edwards, Shannon’s mum, said: “I know she feels really disappointed about not getting through but felt she gave a great semi-final performance. I think nerves got in the way a little, however, despite this she sounded amazing.”
The final will be held at the NEC Arena in Birmingham on July 19 and to buy tickets visit teenstarcompetition.co.uk.
