Angela Hutton, from Third Gidea Park Scouts, reports on the club’s recent activities

The champagne corks have been popping this week as the Scouts celebrated winning the Barton Challenge district hiking contest.

The competition from the other troops was intense and there were some tired feet after a weekend of walking, but it was soon smiles all round when the results were read out.

Recently the troop has been making the most of the summer meeting nights by going canoeing. The number of capsizes was definitely linked to how hot the evenings out were and most of the scouts deliberately ended up going in for a swim.

The troop also had a sponsored abseil in onesies this month to raise money for the jamboree. It was certainly a strange sight to see lots of giant teddy bears and crocodiles making their way up the climbing wall.

The Leopard pack cubs went on camp last weekend.

The leaders had planned lots of traditional camping skills like tracking, fire lighting and pioneering but there was plenty of time to let off steam running around the site and trying out lots of different team sports.

A firm favourite over the weekend was the assault course, particularity the mud slide that appeared after the rain. The evening saw a campfire sing-off with a group from Tower Hamlets, and I’m pleased to say that the Leopard cubs had a resounding victory!

The Polar Bear beavers popped in for a visit on the Saturday of camp and joined the cubs to build boats out of junk. A fine regatta of ships was launched for a race on the river that runs down the side of the site and apart from one that turned into a submarine, they all made it to the finishing line.

The end of term has seen lots of badges being awarded, with more than 200 given out across the sections. Two of our leaders received long service awards.

Over the summer holidays the scouts are heading off to Wales and the cubs go on their summer camp in Essex. Tales of their adventures will be in next month’s edition.

Until then, do get in touch if you would like to add your son or daughter to join the adventure.
