It wasn’t your average school trip when one AS-level physics student gave her teacher an ultrasound scan during a tour around Queen’s Hospital’s radiology department.

Eighteen students from Chigwell School, in High Road, Chigwell, were given a behind the scenes tour of the department on June 22 thanks to a partnership between the school and Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospital Trust (BHRUT).

As well as trying out the ultrasound scanner the students also got to learn more about the x-ray machine and how it is used to detect cancer.

The school’s head of physics Bryan Porter has taken four classes in total to visit the hospital, in Rom Valley Way, Romford and says “it’s a really good opportunity for them”.

“It brings things to life much more than we can in the classroom,” said Bryan.

“I’ve come with each group of students to the hospital, and they always say they enjoy it.”
