These historical images show Havering and Brentwood during the First World War – but who is the artist?
Builder Mick Stevens uncovered them while clearing a house in Harrow nearly 20 years ago. The six pencil drawings are signed “W. L. Phillips” and depict scenes including Squirrel’s Heath, Creaseys Farm in Brentwood, and houses in Gidea Park between 1916 and 1918.
Mr Stevens, of Rushden, Bedford, said he had approached a historian about the pictures back when he discovered them.
The historian believed W. L. Phillips may have been in the Gidea Park officers’ training unit during the war.
You can see all six illustrations in the photo gallery at the top-right of this web page.
