Police have named a Brentwood man as one of the two divers who died in the English Channel.

Christopher Mehegan, 45, died on Saturday afternoon after getting into difficulty during an expedition off the Sussex coast.

Mr Mehegan and Peter Stanning, 44, from Highbury Hill, North London, were both airlifted by a coastguard helicopter to Eastbourne District General Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The pair were diving as part of a group south of Eastbourne off a boat named the Channel Diver.

Dover Coastguard contact police at 1.40pm to report the two divers in difficulty.

Det Ch Insp Mark Ling said: “Tragically two divers have died after getting into difficulty while diving in the channel.”

Sussex Police are investigating the cause of the deaths and a post-mortem is expected to be carried out tomorrow.
