The group of design and technology students from Brentwood School created the Go Glove to help cyclists when they are signalling in the dark.

The design was so well received, it has been shortlisted along with six other schools’ designs for the Virtual Ventura award, a competition that encourages young people to create enterprising products.

The winning design will be manufactured and sold in the Design Museum’s shop.

The glove features LED (light-emitting diode) lights mounted on the back and on the fingertips. When the thumb and forefinger are touched together, they light up.

The idea was inspired by the increase in road accidents involving cyclists, including Tour de France champion and Olympic gold-medal winner Bradley Wiggins.

One of the designers, Ben Rowley, 14, said: “One problem was that you couldn’t see where cyclists were going at night. In the day, you indicate by putting your arm out, so the glove is making cyclists do nothing new.”
