The accomplished Shakespearean actress had an illustrious stage and screen career following her first appearance in repertory theatre at the Queen’s Theatre in 1955.

During her time at the Hornchurch theatre, she appeared as Rose, a country wench, in George Farquhar’s the Recruiting Officer, and Mrs Soames in Our Town by Thornton Wilder.

She also played Susan Barwell in the Pauline and John Phillips farce Mayor’s Nest, and spent time doubling as an assistant stage manager.

But Byrne, who had been living at actors’ retirement home Denville Hall in Hillingdon, was best known for her appearance as lovable and dim-witted Nursie in the second series of Blackadder.

Her death comes just days after fellow Blackadder star Rik Mayall, who played Lord Flashheart in the comedy series, died aged just 56.
