Alcohol sales at new Aldi in Romford Market will cause ‘drunkenness’, says councillor

A councillor is warning of disorder and drunkenness if a new Aldi set to open in Romford is allowed to sell alcohol for 13 hours a day.

A licensing sub-committee will decide on Tuesday whether to allow the supermarket in Romford Market to stock drinks.

The company has applied to sell alcohol from 7am until 8pm seven days a week.

In a written representation, Cllr Frederick Thompson (Cons, Romford Town) said it could create a “public nuisance”.

He wrote: “The store is in close proximity of a number of areas where individuals can indulge in the nasty habit of what is called pre-loading by drinking high strength drinks prior to visiting a pub or club.”

Cllr Thompson said police would find it difficult to patrol drinkers’ hideaways and argued that children could get adult customers to buy them alcohol.

He recommended a ban on super-strength beer and small bottles of spirits.

In its application, Aldi said it was a “responsible” operator and would have stringent identification checks as well as CCTV for security.

Representations for and against the licence will be heard at the hearing at Havering Town Hall, Main Road, Romford.

Aldi is reopening in the former British Heart Foundation Furniture and Electrical Shop, where it previously closed in 2010.
