Be a Super Trouper and take a chance on the Queen’s Theatre, as it presents an Abba tribute show.

Tribute act company, Entertainers, will be turning everyone into Dancing Queens for two nights when it brings Thank You for the Music, to the theatre in Billet Lane, Hornchurch.

Show producer Gary Mac, 54, said: “We have wanted to perform this show for years now, but it was only after we put on a different show at the theatre, and I think they were hopefully impressed, and we were very happy they invited us back to perform this great show.”

Thank You for the Music has been performed around the country for 21 years, but before Gary got involved with the show, he helped to launch legendary 1980s and 90s Romford nightclub, Hollywood, helping with marketing and promoting events.

He recalls the mayhem that a young boyband, who were just starting their careers, would cause when they walked through Hollywood’s doors.

Gary said: “Take That were kicking off their music careers at the time and had a couple of singles out, but we were shocked on the night they performed, as there were about 1,500 screaming girls trying to storm the stage when they got up and performed.”

It was from his position here that he got to know director of Entertainers, Michael Taylor, who regularly held shows at the nightclub and soon welcomed him into his company to help put on shows including A Night of Motown, Elvis is in the Building and The Magic of the 80s.

Gary said: “I think I was chosen to work with Entertainers because I’m good at the promotional side of promoting events, as I had plenty of experience when I was at Hollywood nightclub.

“But I do enjoy working with this show as after all of the preparation is done and when it’s being performed, I can just sit back and listen to all of the great music. It is definitely a lot of hard work and not an easy job to do, but it can also be a lot of fun as well.”

Thank You for the Music has been performed all over the world and will bring all of the classic Abba anthems to life, with singers Amanda Bell, Deborah Shreves, Mark Boden and Anthony Bowler.

Gary added: “We audition for the main roles every year and I think this year they are all very talented and earned the roles they’re playing, helping to hopefully make this show the best that it can possibly be.”

Abba, made up of Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, began their musical journey in 1974 when they won Eurovision with Waterloo and the Swedish four-piece went on to score four UK number ones and sell millions of records around the world.

But the group split up in 1982 and so Thank You for the Music aims to help the audience either relive or enjoy their first experience of Abba.

Gary said: “You wouldn’t have needed to grow up when they were first around to know their music as whether it’s at a birthday or a wedding, there is almost always an Abba song waiting to be played, so you can be fan of them from 10 to 100.

“I love all of the songs but I think my favourite from the show is probably The Winner Takes it All.

“It’s not the standout choice but this is really where our singers’ vocal talents get to shine.”

Thank You for the Music is at the Queen’s Theatre on July 24 and 25 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £16.50-£23. Call the box office on 01708 443333 or visit queens-theatre.co.uk/presenting-the-ultimate-tribute-to-abba.
