Children have had their self portraits unveiled on hoardings around a building site in Dagenham opposite their school.

The site is the former Transport House office block in New Road, where Barking and Dagenham Council is building 149 new homes.

Council leader Darren Rodwell unveiled the portraits along with the building contractors.

The artwork was by 42 pupils from Marsh Green Primary’s nine to 11-year-olds, painted on 16 boards.

It was suggested by head teacher Natalie Sanchez because the children walk past the building site every day and she thought it would be great to see themselves on the hoardings.

“Our pupils are now part of the new housing development with their self-portraits,” she said. “They will have a meaningful and lasting impact on their surroundings in the heart of the community.”

Contractor Hollybrook Homes has also arranged repairs to the climbing frame and two shelters in the school playground, as well as installing six benches.
