The Lionesses have reached a historic World Cup final and Recorder readers could not contain their delight.

England beat Australia 3-1 earlier today (August 16) with goals from Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo.

They will now take on Spain for the chance to lift the trophy on Sunday morning at 11am UK time.

Commenters on the Recorder's Facebook page expressed their delight at the squad's achievement.

Jean Cummins said: "Well done Lionesses. You are all fantastic."

Amy Davies added: "Fantastic results we are going all the way!!! Bring it home."

Her view was echoed by Linda Cox, who also urged the team to "get that cup home".

Another reader, Avis Owen, was watching the match from the other side of the globe.

"Excellent game!!! Well worth the late night here in New Zealand watching!!!"

It is the first time either the men's or women's England team have reached the World Cup final since 1966.
