A dead body has been recovered from the Royal Victoria Dock, police have said.

Officers were called at 7.45am on Wednesday (May 24) after a person was seen in the water.

The body was found to be a man in his 30s and his death is currently being treated as “unexpected” by police.

Firefighters attended the scene after they were called at 7.57am. They worked together with other emergency services for nearly an hour, and the incident was over for them by 8.45am.

Two fire engines from Plaistow and Millwall fire stations and a fire and rescue unit from Lewisham Fire Station were deployed.

London Ambulance Service sent an incident response officer, our hazardous area response team and a tactical response unit, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances of his death. Police are trying to find his next of kin.
