Ukip has gained its first two seats of the election in the Heaton ward, displacing two Labour councillors in what was previously the party’s “stronghold” in Havering.

Ian De Wulverton received 1,546 votes and Philip Hyde, 1,549, will now replace Cllr Paul McGeary and Cllr Denis O’Flynn who is one the borough’s longest ever serving councillors.

Labour leader, Cllr Keith Darvill, “just about” held his seat with 1,206 votes, ahead of his Labour colleagues.

“It’s good to be elected but I’m very disappointed to lose some colleagues as well,” he said

“It’s not good, I might only be the only Labour representative in the town hall.”

Havering’s Ukip leader Cllr Laurence Webb was “very pleased” with the current results despite having 12 of his candidates fail to be elected so far.

He said: “The seats we thought we would do better in are the ones coming up now. The ones this morning, the Romford wards, we didn’t think we would win those anyway.”

The turnout for the ward was 47.2 per cent.
