Local Elections: Two Tories and one Residents’ Association triumph in tight Hylands count

Hylands is the first ward to be split, with two Conservative candidates and one Residents’ Association being elected.

Cllr Garry Pain was elected after receiving 1,596 votes after moving wards from St Andrews, and was joined by his Tory colleague, Carol Smith who won 1,542.

Reisdents’ Association candidate Jody Ganly won the other seat, with 1,553 votes, meaning the Conservatives dropped a seat.

The ward was tight, with Conservative Christine Smith receiving 1,449, just 93 less than Carol Smith.

Ukip also came close, with Cllr Peter Gardner and Neil Hall receiving 1,263 and 1,346.

The turnout was 44.1 per cent, with 4,651 total votes.
