No party has won an overall majority of Havering Council and party leaders must enter discussions to decide its fate.

The Conservatives have scored the highest with 22 councillors but the Residents Association (RA) was close behind with 19 seats.

Chairman of the Romford Conservative Association, which won 20 of the Tory seats, Cllr Osman Dervish said he will be going to talk to all parties “but not Labour.”

Cllr Clarence Barrett, leader of the RA said the result gives him “food for thought” as he seeks to enter talks with all leaders and do “what’s best for Havering.”

Ukip may not have done as well as expected but it did receive seven councillors, when four years ago it had none.

The Independent Residents’ Group increased its seats from four in the 2010 election to five tonight.

Meanwhile, Labour only succeeded in getting its leader Cllr Keith Darvill elected.

Watch the website over the next week to see what the leaders decide and check the Recorder out next Friday for the in depth story.
