If there’s a crime that pretty much all of us have the same view on, it’s stealing from the vulnerable.

How cowardly must you be to target a woman of 88?

Gladys Everett hadn’t done anyone any harm. She was minding her own business at home when she was robbed of jewellery given to her by her late husband.

It seems she had been deliberately targeted. A man had knocked on her door several times over the past few weeks offering to trim trees. She declined the offer, only to discover three men cutting trees on Tuesday.

When they left she realised her safe was open.

Gladys contacted us to warn other people. And she has given a description to police.

So I would urge everyone to keep their wits about them when strangers come knocking on the door. It’s a shame that we have to

be so suspicious of people, but it could help stop you becoming a victim.

Our front page story is a tribute to lifelong Hammers fan Danny Brown, described by his devastated family as “a truly remarkable and inspirational young man”.

No words can ease the pain for his family or friends but the football community is good at showing its compassion in such a situation and applause ringing out around the stadium on the 25th minute of the game will help Danny’s friends to know people are thinking of them and him.

West Ham will show his picture on the big screen.
