West Ham midfielder Mo Diame has admitted that he was expecting the referee to blow for a foul before he was clattered by Hull City goalkeeper Allan McGregor for a penalty on Wednesday night.

In a bizarre sequence of events on 26 minutes, Mark Noble raced into the box, only to lose control and see the ball take two deflections before rebounding into the path of the Senegal international, who takes up the story.

“I think just before the challenge from the goalkeeper, I touched the ball with my arm. I was waiting for the ref to blow up, but sometimes it is good to have the referee with us,” said the 26-year-old midfielder.

“After the handball I could curl the ball in and it was a foul I think, so it was good for us.”

On Saturday against Manchester United, Diame had dithered when he had got in the box, this time he had been more decisive, though he did receive some help from the referee.

“I think in the last game we didn’t have the referee with us, but it happened for us in this game and that is good to get the penalty.

“Mark Noble is always good for these penalties. He always waits until the goalkeeper decided which way to go and then he puts it to the other side.”

It was a vital win for West Ham, but Diame was not impressed by the team’s display.

“The result was the important thing,” he said. “We didn’t play well, but it was all about the three points.

“I think at home we need to play as well as we do away, but the three points was the prize, so now we have seven games left and we have to take as many points as possible.”

Playing against 10 men as West Ham did following the dismissal of goalkeeper Allan McGregor, can be difficult, but Diame dismissed those thoughts.

“I just think we played badly,” he said. “They were 10 as you say and it is not normal that they keep the ball like this, especially on our pitch, but I think we need to be better in the next game.”
