Last season West Ham won a club record-breaking 13 league games on their way to Championship promotion, but this year on the road it is becoming increasingly worrying.

In 10 games so far on their travels they have managed wins at both QPR and Newcastle United, but at the same time they have managed just five goals, two of them in the victory at Loftus Road.

It was something that troubled manager Sam Allardyce on Saturday after he watched his side crash to a 3-0 defeat at Sunderland without really looking like scoring.

“We haven’t scored enough goals away from home,” said the manager. “Even when we got an easy chance against Sunderland, we couldn’t score it.

“We have only scored five away from home this year, so that is a concern for me, but everything about the way we played against Sunderland was a concern for me, not just being able to score goals.”

Kevin Nolan is still the West Ham top scorer with five goals this season, but we haven’t seen that chicken dance celebration since November 11 when he got the winner at Newcastle.

West Ham have spread their goals around this season, but away from home when chances are fewer you need someone to rely on to put the ball into the net and the Hammers do not seem to have one.

“Our away goals are woefully short in terms of what we are looking for,” admitted the manager.

“It is not as if we don’t create chances. The Sunderland game was already gone at 3-0, but we did create some really good chances at that stage and still couldn’t score and that is a concern for me.”
