Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has given his thoughts on the England job and does not think the FA should make a decision until the summer.

The 64-year-old is favourite to replace Fabio Capello after the Italian resigned nearly two weeks ago.

“It would be easier for everyone if the FA didn’t make any announcements until the end of the season,” Redknapp said.

“I couldn’t do anything or go anywhere now and the chances are that whoever they go for will already be in a job. It will be difficult for them to walk out of their club at this stage of the year.

“I can only concentrate on Tottenham. We have had a great season and I don’t want the players to start thinking ‘What’s he doing, is he going or staying’?”

“There is so much for the club to play for and I have to be here until the end of the season whatever happens.”

Redknapp also revealed he will speak to his son, Jamie, about the job.

Jamie was at his father’s side during his trial for tax evasion, from which he was cleared.

“I speak to Jamie more than anybody,” he added.

“I’d speak to him about it for sure - he’s one I’d stand on more than anyone.”

Redknapp, though, insists he is strong enough to take on the England job and any flack that would come with it.

“It goes with the job,” said the 64-year-old.

“There have been some good managers who have all had it. Apart from Terry Venables in Euro ‘96, everybody else has been slaughtered at times.

“If you lose a couple of games, it is like the world is coming to an end, isn’t it? That’s what you have to put up with.

“It is getting near the knuckle now, though. I heard the other day during a game on TV some people chanting about some player’s wife.

“I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“But that is what happens now - it is different to how it used to be.”

Redknapp revealed that he had spoken to Daniel Levy about the England job.

“I have spoken to Daniel and he wants me to stay,” he explained.

“I haven’t had an approach from anybody. They (the FA) may be thinking along completely different lines to what everyone else is thinking. They might want someone else.”

The 64-year-old also wants to win the FA Cup with Tottenham.

“I’d love to win the FA Cup and, until somebody says ‘do you want the England job’, I’ve just got to keep Spurs playing well,” he said.

“We grew up with the tradition of the FA Cup.

“It was the big day of the year, so it would be lovely to go Wembley with Tottenham.”
