St Martin’s under-16 girls fought off competition from 10 other schools to claim the Essex Futsal title and earn a place in the regional finals.
Saints went to the national finals in Birmingham last year and started their bid for glory with a 1-1 draw against Barking Abbey, after Sophie Moody gave them the lead.
It was the same scoreline in their second encounter against Frances Bardsley and again they were denied by a late leveller following Moody’s second of the day. Lucy Bacon had produced several fine saves before the equaliser.
Saints needed to win their final group game against Marshalls Park to reach the semi-finals and did just that with goals from Charlotte Walker and Moody as Lubin Jaques and Amie Tucker also impressed.
Beauchamps were their semi-final opponents and the girls were in inspired form as they cruised to an easy 2-0 victory with Moody and Holly Campbell netting.
Perennial rivals Shenfield stood in between Saints and the regional finals and the enormity of the task was there for all to see, with Shenfield having won the national title with the same players in year seven.
Shenfield High had not conceded a goal going into the final but St Martin’s stormed out of the blocks and Moody was in fine form again to break the deadlock.
Becky Martin added the second and an own goal made it 3-0 to wrap up the county title in style.
