Purcell: A good game to win

Hornchurch striker George Purcell was happy to get another win at the weekend against East Thurrock, but described conditions in the Ryman Premier match as the worst he has played in.

Heavy rain and even thunder and lightning hit various parts of Essex hard on Saturday and Purcell described what it was like to play in during Hornchurch’s 2-1 success.

He said: “Before the game the pitch was a bit waterlogged anyway. Then during the game it just got worst and worst.

“The last 15 minutes was probably the worst I’ve played in, there were puddles everywhere.

“It was a good game to win, but not the best to play in as the ball was mainly in the air, we couldn’t really play any football in the conditions.”

Urchins victory came courtesy of a brace from Purcell’s striker partner Stefan Payne and included an outrageous opener from the forward, as the 22-year-old lashed into the net from way outside the area.

Payne nodded in the second from a corner, although Elliot Styles appeared to tap it in at the far post.

Purcell added: “The first one was from outside the area and a really good goal. I don’t even think the keeper saw it go in.

“I think Elliot did get a slight touch (on the second), but it was going in and he’s given it to Stefan.”

There was controversy towards the end of the match, though, as a long-range East Thurrock free-kick flew in, with some assistance from the wind.

The ‘goal’ was ruled out straight away by the linesmen as a home forward was impeding Urchins keeper Inigo Echepare, with Purcell, 25, adding: “That was how their first goal went in as well, the wind helped it after the geezer shot from about 40 yards out!

“The referee said no one touched it and they were claiming it hit the keeper but to be fair the linesmen already had his flag up for offside.

“That probably helped the referee make his mind up straight away. It was probably the right decision.”

Hornchurch are due back in action tonight at home against lowly Cray and 20-goal Purcell is hoping it goes ahead.

Purcell struck twice in a 6-1 victory against Wanderers at the start of the season but will not be taking them lightly if the Bridge Avenue pitch passes an inspection at 1pm.

He said: “I think they have improved a little bit since then.

“If we go into it taking them lightly then we’ll get punished so we won’t be doing that. Hopefully it goes ahead and we can get three points again.”
