Hornchurch skipper Elliot Styles hopes their FA Cup ‘dress-rehearsal’ with East Thurrock goes to plan, with another three points for their impressive start to the Ryman Premier season.
Urchins come up against the Rocks at Bridge Avenue today in league action before facing them again a week later in the FA Cup first qualifying round.
And Styles insists they can only focus on the challenge John Coventry’s men provide in the league.
“They’ve always been a threat whenever we have come up against them in the past,” said Styles.
“You don’t get to the first round of the FA Cup for being a bad side, likewise by winning the Ryman One North.
“It is a dress rehearsal and it’s weird how it works out that way, but you can’t afford to look too far ahead as a player. The focus must be on the league first and foremost.”
Styles will have his work cut out as he tries to keep former Urchins team-mate Leon McKenzie quiet, while ex-Hornchurch goalkeeper Darren Behcet is likely to be between the posts for Rocks.
And the central defender is wary of the added incentive both will have to get one over on a former side.
“Old players always have that extra incentive to do well against you and that will definitely be the case for Darren and Leon,” he added.
“Both of the players were fantastic for the club in their time here and I am sure they’ll get a good reception.
“I’ll have to be on my toes to help keep Leon quiet, we all know what he can do and it will add a little bit of spice to the day.”
There will be no excuse for Jimmy McFarlane’s side not knowing enough about the opposition in the cup tie in a week’s time, but Styles believes their judgement could be clouded if they focus too much on today’s events.
“I don’t know whether it’s an advantage playing them so soon after or not,” said Styles.
“Your vision can be clouded if you concentrate too much on just one performance, but I am sure the gaffer will have his plans in mind for both games.”
Hull City manager Steve Bruce believes that Arsenal have the ability to win the league this season.
