Ryman Premier: Wealdstone 2 Hornchurch 0
A goal in each half sent Hornchurch to defeat against promotion rivals Wealdstone in north London last night.
Urchins boss Jimmy McFarlane had called it his side’s biggest match of the season to date, but Scott McGleish and Tom Pett netted either side of the break to earn the home side the points.
The 39-year-old McGleish had the first chance of note, firing wide, but Michael Spencer sent a decent opportunity over the crossbar for the visitors on 19 minutes.
Having netted in Saturday’s 4-2 home win over Leiston, George Purcell fired a free kick into the wall just before the half hour mark.
But Inigo Echepare was called upon to make a superb save to deny the hosts from the best chance of the game on 32 minutes.
And Echepare held a free kick soon after before a quick clearance gave Stefan Payne an opening, but his effort was saved by Jonathan North.
Stones then forced a string of corners late in the half and broke the deadlock to the delight of the majority of the 685 crowd when former Leyton Orient striker McGleish hooked home.
The home side almost added a second before the break when a strong run by Pett saw him pull the ball back for McGleish, but the Hornchurch defence cleared just in time.
Echepare was in action early in the second half to deny McGleish, before McFarlane sent Tambeson Eyong on for Leigh Bremner.
Eyong’s night lasted only six minutes, though, before he picked up an injury and had to be replaced by Folkes.
And the visitors had a let-off when Devon Malcolm failed to take a chance midway through the second half.
Spencer volleyed just wide after some good approach play from Urchins, but they had Echepare to thank for a good save to keep out Pett after he had beaten the offside trap.
Purcell crossed for Spencer on 77 minutes, but his effort was straight at North and hopes of salvaging a point disappeared four minutes from time when Pett scored a superb second for Stonesm curling home from 20 yards.
Hornchurch: Echepare, Coyne (Rook 67), Spencer, Styles, Hayles, Curley, Starkey, May, Payne, Purcell, Bremner (Eyong 52) (Folkes 58).
Unused subs: Rainford, Lechmere.
