Romford’s stand-in captain Paul Clayton was delighted to make his point from the penalty spot against Thurrock on Monday.

Long-serving Clayton fired home to seal a 3-1 win at Ship Lane as Boro returned to winning ways following defeat at Aveley on Saturday.

And he was glad to live up to his promise to manager Paul Martin, saying: “It was a great win and so important to bounce back.

“I told Magic I wanted the responsibility of penalties as captain as we’ve missed the last few so it was nice to hammer it home and get the three points.

“All the lads were excellent and deserved the win. Hopefully we can take it into next Saturday and bring some well-needed money to the club in the FA Cup.”

Clayton is currently wearing the armband in the absence of injured skipper Jack Barry, who is continuing his rehabilitation from a broken ankle.

And Barry revealed he is seeing improvements on a daily basis, saying: “It has been a couple of weeks now since the cast has been off and I’ve been starting to put more weight on the ankle day-by-day.

“It seems to be healing nicely but it’s still very swollen.

“I’ve been told it’s bone bruising which could take a while to go down, but it should’t affect me too much.

“I’ve been given loads of exercises to do by the physio and you can see the improvement on the ankle already, so I’m taking it day-by-day at the moment.”
