Barry: Long break did not help

Romford captain Jack Barry is still having nightmares over a chance he missed during Wednesday’s loss to Ryman Division One North high-flyers Harlow.

Boro were playing their first game since December 14, due to a spate of postponements for waterlogged pitches, and fell behind when Scott Curley netted in the 50th minute at Ship Lane.

But Barry had a good opportunity to earn his side a point, only to see it go to waste.

Barry said: “To be honest, it’s hard to explain. I just misjudged where I was and thought I was closer to the post, so thought it needed the slightest of touches, then realised it needed a bit more on it.

“If you put me in that situation again I would never miss it again, but those things happen I guess.

“I’m more disappointed about the result.”

Harlow were reduced to 10 men on the hour when captain Darren Blewitt was shown a straight red card but Boro could not make use of their numerical superiority as they fell to a 1-0 defeat.

They lie just above the relegation zone, but have games in hand on all their rivals towards the bottom of the table and are set to visit Chatham tomorrow (Saturday) before facing landlords Thurrock on Tuesday.

Barry is hoping they can quickly rediscover the form that saw them go three games unbeaten in December, after a six-game losing streak.

He added: “You could put it down to being a bit rusty after the long break between games, but I was happy with the way I played in my own performance.

“But all the boys played well after not having a game for so long and Harlow having not missed many games because of their 3G pitch, so they were match-fit.

“I’m hoping we can take that hunger and determination into Saturday’s game.”
