Romford manager Paul Martin admits he would prefer to sit in the stands tonight with Barkingside manager Matt Frew rather than go head to head on the touchline as the teams do battle in the Ryman One North at Oakside.

The pair are notoriously close friends and speaking before Boro’s 2-1 defeat to Tilbury, a defeat which halted Romford’s eight-match winning streak, Martin praised tonight’s opponents.

He said: “It is probably one game I wouldn’t want to be in the other dugout against Matt, I would rather sit in the stand with him and enjoy the game.

“Football does that though, we always get on well and hopefully it is a good game to watch and we can have a beer after.

“I think Barkingside are safe now, they just need one more win because it is out of them and Wroxham as to who goes down

“And I would rather Barkingside stay up instead of Wroxham because of the travelling!”

Side looked in trouble around February time after enduring a torrid run, but Frew has turned it around since and they have only lost once in seven and that was to league leaders VCD Athletic.

Romford boss Martin has praised the work done by his counterpart, adding: “Matt has had a fantastic little run and he just had to be patient.

“He has got some good players in that side and a lot of them older boys were with me so I know what ability he has got at that club.

“Matt is a good young manager. He has a lot to learn, like we all have, but he has had a hard year and now he can sit back and enjoy himself a bit more.

“He can let his boys play with some freedom and get a few more points to keep them in the Ryman because he deserves it.”

Martin will be hoping that Barkingside don’t manage to get those points tonight though, as his side will be looking to bounce back following Saturday’s defeat and reach the 65 point target that the Boro boss has set his side.
