Romford manager Paul Martin was downbeat after his side lost their penultimate Ryman One North game of the season to Brentwood at Ship Lane.

The Boro boss wasn’t happy with his side’s performance against their local rivals either, as goals from Matt Toms and Jamie Dicks proved mere consolations as a poor first half cost them.

Martin admitted his players are struggling to motivate themselves with nothing left to play for, saying: “I wouldn’t have said we deserved anything out of the game, we have certainly chucked the towel in now.

“We have gone from playing excellent football to playing like a pub team. It is hard to try and motivate the players when you’ve got nothing to play for.

“I think we knew we blew our chance, that glimmer of hope for the play-offs, and they just look deflated now and even myself, I am struggling to pick myself up at the moment.

“I am more disappointed because it is a derby again and they’ve taken six points off us this year and to be quite honest they have probably deserved both wins and that is the frustrating thing for me.”

Joe Oates missed a spot-kick with the scoreline 2-1 in Brentwood’s favour, but Martin wasn’t too harsh on the midfielder, adding: ““Joe scored a fantastic penalty on Saturday against Dereham.

“He is our third choice penalty taker and you would see a penalty like that in La Liga, but it was more like Hackney Marshes.

“I can’t knock him because his work rate was good, he has given one hundred per cent.”

Boro end their campaign with a trip to second-placed VCD Athletic on Saturday but can only finish as high as 11th now.
