Ryman Division 1N: Romford 4 Barkingside 1
A sparkling hat-trick from Tom Richardson gave Romford all three points against Barkingside, as the hosts recovered from a horror start to win comfortably at Ship Lane last night.
Eddie Hart also grabbed his first for Boro as boss Paul Martin got one over former player Matt Frew, the Barkingside manager.
The visitors included eight former Boro players in their squad and one of them opened the scoring after just 32 seconds.
Romford kicked off but as soon as Richard Oxby picked up the ball, he threaded a pass into Toran Senghore’s path and the striker slotted home with supreme composure to give the visitors a dream start.
The hosts got themselves back into the game and had their first decent opportunity when Robbie Norris fired over.
Richardson kept popping up in decent positions and equalised in the 22nd minute.
And he was indebted to strike partner Ryan Imbert, who bustled down the line and cut the ball back for Richardson to fire home and level.
Senghore was still proving a handful for the Boro defenders and fired wide to remind everyone of Barkingside’s threat.
It was Romford that had the next opportunity, though, and it was taken by Richardson, although in fairness, he couldn’t miss.
Abs Seymour whipped the ball in towards the back post where Paul Clayton nodded back for Richardson to head home on the goalline.
Barkingside skipper Dan Callaway nearly scored from 25 yards before the break, but Aaron Omand was able to push his shot wide to keep Boro in front.
As they did in the first period, Barkingside started brightly after the restart and a rash Jamie Dicks challenge resulted in the visitors being awarded a penalty.
It all started following a lack of communication between David Ottley and Clayton, as Andy Edmunds ran through and was chopped down by Dicks.
But Omand was the hero, saving Sengahore’s spot-kick to his left.
Hart and Scott Truman came close to doubling Boro’s lead before the former eventually did so in the 55th minute.
Richardson played a perfectly weighted through ball into the path of Hart, who ran on to slot home and open his Boro account.
Barkingside pushed for a goal to bring themselves back in the game, but efforts from Edmunds and Callaway couldn’t find the net.
And Romford made them pay in the 72nd minute as Richardson bagged the match ball.
After assisting Hart’s earlier effort, the favour was repaid as a wonderful defence-splitting pass found Richardson, who took it in his stride and finished well to seal his treble and the points.
