Leading goalscorer reflects on successful season

Romford striker Tom Richardson was delighted to walk off with the club’s Best Stats award, after topping the goalscoring charts with 16 goals during the Ryman One North season.

Richardson claimed his prize at Boro’s end of season presentation evening at Ford Sports Newbury Park, when manager Paul Martin revealed he would be remaining in his post, despite offers to move elsewhere.

Richardson said: “It was a better season, but it’s a learning curve and hopefully I can go into next season with more experience and hopefully score more goals and help the team.

“There has been a couple of goals that I enjoyed, the winner against Thurrock and a last-minute winner against Waltham Abbey, but my favourite would have to be against Needham Market.

“They were a very good team and it was a time where we were on a fantastic streak, so to score the goal that kept that run going meant a lot.”

Richardson’s goals helped Boro finish the campaign in 11th place with a haul of 68 points, their best in five years at this level.

And he believes that with Martin remaining at the helm – to be assisted by Alex Goldstone and Paul Clayton following Mark Lord’s retirement – they can push on next term.

He added: “For a team that doesn’t have a budget Magic and the whole team has done fantastic when you look at what we’ve done.

“It’s easy to look back at some results and think we could have done better, but we are a young team and it’s a learning curve for us.

“It’s a massive bonus keeping hold of Magic and I can’t see why we can’t have a big go at the play-offs next season.

“We know we can hold our own against the big teams as we beat plenty of them this season.”
