Ryman Div 1N: Romford 2 VCD Athletic 0
Romford beat Ryman One North leaders VCD Athletic last night thanks to a stunning display as first-half goals from captain Jack Barry and Eddie Hart earned them a fourth win in six days and their 15th league win of the season.
Manager Paul Martin got his tactics spot on as Boro pressed the away side from the first minute to the last and earned a thoroughly deserved three points to take their tally to 50.
Romford made six changes following Monday’s excellent 2-0 win at Soham Town Rangers and survived a scare after Alfie May cut inside and curled wide for the visitors.
Chris Barry was involved from the off and nearly opened the scoring with a sweetly struck volley before brother Jack made the breakthrough three minutes later.
The impressive Danny Jones forced VCD keeper Nick Blue to tip wide and from the resulting corner the ball dropped perfectly for Barry and he sidefooted in the opener to spark jubilant home celebrations.
Romford keeper Atu Ngoy was called upon twice before half time, firstly on 31 minutes when Karl Dent and Michael Power combined to release May.
The dangerous winger raced behind the Boro defence, but Ngoy made himself big to preserve the lead.
The Boro keeper then made a sensational stop to deny Lea Dawson after he headed Dean Carpenter’s free kick towards goal and Ngoy somehow tipped wide.
It would prove decisive as the outstanding Hart doubled the home team’s lead on the stroke of half time.
Jones played the perfect pass for Hart and although Blue saved the Romford man’s first effort, he could not stop Hart from slotting in at the second attempt to make it 2-0 at the break.
Ryan Imbert nearly grabbed a third just after the interval, but fired wide before VCD enjoyed a prolonged spell of possession.
However, despite the away side controlling the ball Romford kept their shape and Ngoy was rarely tested.
Abs Seymour blocked Ben Payne’s header to protect Boro’s two-goal margin before Jones nearly headed in a third.
May continued to pose a threat, but David Ottley was able to clear his dangerous cross as Romford stood strong with the full time whistle approaching.
VCD nearly grabbed a consolation in the last minute of injury time following a goalmouth scramble, but the hosts held firm to earn a fourth consecutive clean sheet.
