Stefan Payne’s latest strike ensured Hornchurch maintained their spot in the Ryman Premier play-offs.

Payne and strike partner George Purcell combined early on with the later denied by Robins goalkeeper Michael White.

The hosts did force a couple of corner but nothing materialised of them, before Michael Spencer shot wide twice in a matter of minutes.

However on 34 minutes Spencer turned provider for the only goal of the game as he clipped a ball through for Payne who slid an effort underneath White and into the net.

Tambeson Eyong was at his defensive best to prevent Carshalton a chance on goal as the half drew to a close, before the midfielder picked up a caution.

Purcell produced a good run and cross early in the second period though no-one was on the end of it before Joe May flashed a 20 yard shot over after good work from Eyong and Payne.

Purcell saw a lobbed effort well held by White and the ‘keeper was in action again to deny Payne from a one-on-one situation.

The Urchins were dominate, with the hosts having little to shout about on the attack before Purcell shot wide after good work from Rickie Hayles, and White cut out a Purcell cross with May waiting in the box to finish the move off.

Payne was denied another one-on-one with play approaching the final 15 minutes, and he then hit the post as chances continue to come their way.

Frankie Curley was cautioned on 83 minutes as tempers began to flare and May followed him into the book.

Substitute Martin Tuohy was denied well by White in the closing stages, before Stefan Cox was sent off for the hosts having been on the pitch for around eight minutes.

Payne was replaced late on by Chris Bourne, but the Urchins managed to come away with an important win, as they sit in third place in the Ryman Premier table.

Jimmy McFarlane’s side host Hendon at Bridge Avenue on Saturday.
