McFarlane to take midweek trip

Hornchurch have their first free midweek in more than a month, but manager Jimmy McFarlane will still go to a game tonight.

Urchins maintained their Ryman Premier Division promotion push with a 2-1 win at Harrow on Saturday, as goals from Chris Bourne and Stefan Payne clinched the points to keep them in second place.

And the players now have a chance to rest up ahead of Easter weekend clashes with Hampton and Canvey, as Urchins look for a quick return to Conference South.

McFarlane said: “I will still be going to watch a game and it will be nice to do so without any pressure or stress.

“I was going to go to Hampton, but can’t make that now so I will probably end up at Billericay.”

George Purcell’s 86th-minute goal earned Urchins a point at Hampton last Thursday, before their weekend success at Harrow.

And McFarlane was especially pleased with his side’s work rate, despite playing a second game in less than 48 hours.

He added: “I was really impressed with our energy levels, considering we had a tough game at Hampton.

“They went and lost at home to Thamesmead on Saturday, but I was very pleased with us at Harrow. It’s always been a tough place for us to go to and get a result, but to be fair it was as comfortable a 2-1 as you’ll see.

“Their penalty was outside the box, even their chairman said so. It would’ve been a 3-0 or 4-0 win otherwise.”

McFarlane was delighted to see in-form strike duo Purcell and Payne maintain their scoring streaks and had praise for the returning Martin Tuohy.

He added: “I think one of my strikers will get the golden boot. It’s very tight but Charlie Moone has got a three-game ban coming up.

“George and Stefan are both very happy here – we’ve looked after them. And we’ve got Martin getting his fitness back too. He was excellent on Saturday, probably the pick of the three and looked fresher for 60 or 70 minutes.”
