Hornchurch manager Jimmy McFarlane admitted he had mixed emotions after his side were held to a 1-1 draw by Ryman Premier Division rivals Bognor on Saturday.

Urchins had a hatful of chances at Nyewood Lane, against a team well known for their formidable form at home having lost just four times in 16 league matches prior to the weekend.

George Purcell put Hornchurch ahead after two minutes but further wasted opportunities meant McFarlane felt it was two points dropped.

He said: “I’ve got mixed feelings. On the way down I would have taken a point.

“They had scored 44 goals in 16 games and are highest scorers in the division at home, but I was disappointed after our first-half showing.

“Their keeper (Grant Smith) got the man of the match but to be honest we were missing the chances not him saving them in the first half.

“It is two points dropped considering the chances we had.”

It was one of the few occasions this season where Hornchurch’s supreme forward line could not deliver a win and McFarlane recognised that.

Kingstonian are the only promotion rival of Hornchurch who still have to visit Bognor and McFarlane thinks any team going to the south coast will have a stern test.

“It was an opportunity missed and you can’t afford to not take them,” he added.

“It was a case of poor finishing but in fairness I haven’t been able to say that too many times this season.

“We had the better chances in the second half and the only thing this time was that we tested him.

“As I said I would have taken a point earlier in the day. They are a good side without a shadow of a doubt. I don’t think many teams will beat them there this season.”
