Ryman Premier preview: Hampton & Richmond Borough v AFC Hornchurch

Hornchurch manager Jimmy McFarlane is looking for his side to bounce back against Hampton & Richmond Borough this evening in the Ryman Premier and the order of the day is keeping a clean sheet.

Urchins suffered a disappointing defeat to play-off rivals Hendon at the weekend in a game embroiled with controversy and although a top-five finish is still in their hands, a win at the Beveree Stadium would boost their hopes of earning a home play-off tie.

McFarlane knows it won’t be easy tonight though, he said: “It’s important to bounce back and it does us a favour having this break until Thursday because we had quite a few knocks. We’ve got to pick them up, pick us up and go again.

“Going to Hampton will be tough but every game is tough and every game recently has proved that.”

Stefan Payne scored as Urchins defeated Carshalton 1-0 on April 1 but their 2-1 defeat at home to Hendon was disappointing and therefore McFarlane is challenging his side to keep more clean sheets.

He added: “Carshalton was a hard game and Hendon probably didn’t play as well as Carshalton did but we gave away sloppy goals on Saturday.

“I keep saying if we keep clean sheets we will win games because we do score near enough every single game and we’ve scored again on Saturday but given away two poor, poor goals.”

Keeping a clean sheet against Hampton’s talented forward duo Dave Tarpey and Charlie Moone will be tough and though the pair are available tonight, their sending off against Lowestoft last weekend will rule them out of the return meeting at Bridge Avenue on April 19.

However, McFarlane’s immediate thoughts will be on this evening’s clash and with the chasing pack continually making ground it is a big game for Urchins.
