Martin frustrated by Romford’s individual mistakes in Heybridge Swifts loss

Romford boss Paul Martin was annoyed with the individual mistakes his players made at the weekend which he feels gifted Heybridge Swifts all three points at Ship Lane.

Swifts won 3-1 in the Ryman One North on Saturday, but Martin felt it could have been a win for Boro had they cut out errors and took their chances.

Nick Reynolds equalised after the visitors went ahead in the first half, but two more second half Swift strikes punished Romford.

“We went back to our old ways of making individual mistakes,” a frustrated Martin explained.

“Nick (Reynolds) has had a couple of good chances, Ryan Imbert has had a couple and then we’ve made mistakes as well.

“And then we got it back to 1-1 but again didn’t clear properly and got punished for it.

“We gave the ball away for third goal as well so have gifted them all of their goals which are disappointing.”

Romford were without several key players on Saturday as Paul Clayton and David Ottley were unavailable, while Chris Barry and Eddie Hart were also absent.

The ill discipline of other Boro players against Swifts means more suspensions are looming as Dan Jones and Matt Toms were both sent off while Nick Reynolds was booked for diving.

Martin commented on those decisions, saying: “I have no complaints about Dan but everyone could see it was a foul in the first place which wasn’t given but then Dan has lost his patience and kicked out.

“And then Nick, even Heybridge Swifts players said it was a penalty at half time and I don’t think in all my years I’ve ever seen someone booked for diving in this league.

“I feel sorry for Matt Toms as well because he now misses the last game of the season against VCD Athletic and the next two of next season now.

“No disrespect to Toms, he is a fantastic player but he hasn’t got much pace any more but if you watch football every week you see the type of foul he committed all the time and it is always a booking.

“It is a professional foul, a yellow card but never a sending off.

“Abs Seymour also picked up his 10th booking of the season so misses Brentwood Town and VCD Athletic now.”

Martin did concede that the recent superb run from his team, eight consecutive league wins, means he can’t be too harsh on his players.

The Romford manager said: “We had a fantastic run and that was down to everyone doing their individual job.

“At the moment people aren’t doing that but it is probably down to tiredness and the boys knowing they can’t make the play-offs. I can’t knock them though, they have been fantastic.”
