Skipper facing fitness test
Hornchurch are waiting to see if captain Elliot Styles will be able to play their Ryman Premier Division play-off at Kingstonian tonight.
Styles went off during their 1-0 win over Met Police on Saturday – which clinched fifth place – with an ankle injury and will have a fitness test at 3pm.
And McFarlane is hoping the long-serving centre-back gets the green light to feature at Kingsmeadow.
He said: “Elliot has played in play-offs before and been involved in big games.
“He’s one of our most experienced players and he’s having a great season as well.
“But it is what it is. Rickie Hayles is flying at the moment, I’ve not seen a better centre-half, and Dave Rainford has played games there too.
“If Elliot isn’t fit, we’ve got to get on and deal with it.”
The Urchins squad had a light training session at Bridge Avenue last night and McFarlane says the mood in the camp is good ahead of their big match.
He added: “It was nothing too strenuous, a bit of head tennis and a chance to get Saturday’s game out of their legs.
“It can feel like a long time between games when it’s Saturday-Wednesday and there will be nerves.
“I was nervous as a player and for some of the younger ones it is going to be the biggest game they’ve played in.
“You expect nerves, but we’ve got enough experience in the dressing room and on the management side of things to cope with it.”
As for his own emotions ahead of the crucial clash, McFarlane added: “I slept like a baby last night – I was up every two hours!”
