Ryman League Cup: Billericay 7 Hornchurch 2
Hornchurch saw their long unbeaten run brought to an end as they were sent tumbling out of the Ryman League Cup amid a feast of goals at New Lodge.
Urchins had been unbeaten in their previous 15 league and cup matches, but it was clear where manager Jimmy McFarlane’s priorities lie, with an FA Cup third qualifying round tie against Wealdstone coming up at the weekend.
McFarlane included four debutants as he made nine changes to his starting line-up from their 5-1 Ryman Premier Division win at Grays on Saturday, with Michael Spencer and Joey May the only survivors.
And George Purcell went close from a free-kick on 14 minutes, while Sam Lechmere dragged a shot wide against his former club moments later.
The hosts took the lead on 24 minutes when Richard Halle headed home from a corner and Evans Kouassi made it 2-0 just three minutes later.
A third goal arrived on 33 minutes and Billericay moved 4-0 up just before the break when Chris Webber tucked home a loose ball after Roberts had saved an initial shot.
Urchins pulled one back on the hour thanks to Lechmere, but Billericay restored the four-goal cushion six minutes later.
And the home side netted twice more in a three-minute spell to make it 7-1 before substitute Alex Bentley grabbed a last-gasp consolation for the visitors.
But with another £7,500 in prize money up for grabs at Bridge Avenue on Saturday, and the chance to take another step towards the first round proper, McFarlane and his men have bigger concerns.
Hornchurch: Roberts, Coyne, Spencer, Starkey, Muwanga, Tabiri, Onera, Lechmere (Bentley 79), Yusuff (Bremner 79), Purcell, May (Curley 70).
Arsenal have decisions to make on a host of first team players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the season.
