FA Cup: Spalding United 1 Hornchurch 4
Carl Rook’s hat-trick fired Hornchurch into the third qualifying round of the FA Cup at Sir Halley Stewart Field.
Urchins travelled to Lincolnshire unbeaten in 12 matches and proved too strong for the Tulips as they banked the £4,500 in prize money.
The first chances of the game fell to Spalding but a shot was dragged wide on six minutes, while Inigo Echepare saved a tame effort three minutes later.
Rook headed over from a Chris Bourne cross before Frankie Curley was booked for a poor tackle and Rook could not convert after a great run and cross from Tambeson Eyong on 18 minutes.
But Rook, whose goal against East Thurrock in the previous round had earned Urchins a replay, made no mistake on the half-hour mark after some great work by Stefan Payne created the chance for him to slot home.
Echepare denied the home side a reply before the break and Urchins doubled their advantage 10 minutes after the restart when Rook headed home from Chris Bourne’s cross.
The visitors were awarded a penalty just past the hour mark when another Bourne cross was handled in the box and Rook stepped up to convert from the spot to complete his treble.
Rook then made way for new signing Leigh Bremner, who joined the club from Cray at the end of the week along with goalkeeper Luke Roberts, and the hosts pulled one back on 71 minutes when Andy Tidswell curled a shot into the top corner.
Jimmy McFarlane sent Sam Lechmere and Ade Yusuff on in the closing stages and saw his side net a fourth six minutes from time when good work by Eyong set up Yusuff to score.
Hornchurch: Echepare, Bentley, Spencer, Hayles, Styles, Curley, Eyong, May, Payne (Yusuff 82), Rook (Bremner 65), Bourne (Lechmere 79).
Romford ended a run of six consecutive defeats with a hard fought point against Tilbury on Saturday in a 1-1 draw in the Ryman One North.
